Hansel and Gretel – presented by Elizabeth Drucker’s Ballet School

On May 20th and 21st Elizabeth Drucker’s Ballet School returns to the Orion Performing Arts Center for its annual spring production. This year marks a special collaboration between the school, lighting and scenic designer – John Urquhart, and local artist – Susan Mills. Set to a moving score by 19th and 20th century composers, the production features over one hundred of the Topsham ballet school’s classically trained dancers in a new and original version of Hansel and Gretel.
The idea for the ballet began in 2015 when Drucker, the Ballet School’s director, first met with Mills to discuss incorporating a bit of her artwork into a future production. Drucker soon reached the conclusion that Mills’ work was too beautiful to simply be a sideline to a show; Drucker wanted to create an original ballet around it. It didn’t take long to alight on the story of Hansel and Gretel, a tale Drucker has always been drawn to. Not only was it the perfect vehicle to highlight Mills’ creations – which incorporate branches and vines and mythic symbolism – but it was also the perfect ballet for her school, with a multitude of wonderful parts well suited to her diverse and talented student body.
True to the Grimm fairy tale, the ballet is rich in contrasts, from the darkness of the witch’s forest offset by the triumphant spirit of the story’s two protagonists. Those familiar with The Ballet School’s productions will recognize Drucker’s customary style of incorporating mixed age groups onstage in creative ways, as well as the theatrical nature of her productions, all enhanced by Urquhart’s magical lighting effects. Drucker, a former dancer with New York City Ballet, will join her students on stage to portray The Witch in this spring’s production. The performance lasts approximately one hour and will delight all ages. General admission tickets available at the door one hour prior to performance.
