My Maine, new paintings by Ann Getsinger

MY MAINE, a series of 17 oil paintings, each depicting a specific spot in Maine, and described as “realism with a twist,” will be on exhibit at the Merrill Memorial Library, 215 Main Street, Yarmouth beginning Monday, Sept. 18

Artist Ann Getsinger has prepared six “chapters” in the series, much like a book, leaving little space between the paintings so they may be read as one very long painting which wraps around the exhibit room, yet each painting is designed to stand alone. She places real objects in locations drawn from memory and imagination.

Getsinger’s art was stimulated by many experiences: one is based on a chapter in Sara Orne Jewett’s book, The Country of the Pointed Firs, published in 1896 and written in Martinsville, Maine less than a mile from her family’s home. Other “chapters” of her paintings were spawned in the areas of Mosquito Island, Pebble Beach and Mosquito Harbor. One of the chapters consists of a lone painting, a portrait of a specific dog who had a “big impact on my Maine experience.”
