Portland, Maine, October 12, 2017- USM’s Judaica Collection of the Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity in Maine, partnering with the National Council of Jewish Women, Southern Maine Section, is presenting a panel discussion followed by community conversation about how the National Council of Jewish Women, a volunteer service organization, set out to assist immigrants in Maine from the 1920s to the present. Images from the exhibition, “Sarah’s Generosity” by Jo Israelson, honoring seven of the women who worked in the 1920s, will be featured during the program.
USM’s Judaica Collection collects and preserves the history of Maine’s Jewish Community and in 2015 became the home of the Southern Maine Section of the National Council of Jewish Women’s Archives. This organization has provided community service to Maine since the 1920s as well as advocating for progressive ideals.

Immigrants from Europe arriving at House Island in Casco Bay, as well as recent refugees from Darfur received a warm welcome and helping hand from Maine’s Jewish women. Members of the organization will discuss their work, at a time when immigration is a national debate.

The program, 5:30-7pm, will be held in the University Event Room, 7th floor of the Glickman Family Library, USM Portland campus, 314 Forest Ave.
The University of Southern Maine’s Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity in Maine, which is also the home of the LGBTQ+ and African-American Collections, and the National Council of Jewish Women, regularly sponsor programs on social justice and Maine.
