Partners in Art, Partners in Life: John David Ellis & Joan Beauregard
November 8, 2018 – March 10, 2019

UNE Art Gallery in collaboration with the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation, the exhibition at the University of New England Museum of Art explores the lives and artwork of Rockland, Maine residents, John David Ellis and Joan Beauregard. After meeting at the Arts Students League in in New York City in the 1950s, artists Ellis and Beauregard became life partners until their deaths in 2015 and 2009, respectively. Near the end of their lives Joan and David generously placed their wealth in two foundations: Anonimo and the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation.

Joan and David enjoyed separate studio spaces within their home in Rockland, yet they created art which drew inspiration from shared interests such as modernist abstraction, philosophy and spirituality. By juxtaposing artwork, book selections from their home library, and personal possessions from the Foundation’s collection, the exhibition will focus on a nuanced interpersonal and intimate biographical approach as a means to understand an artist’s work and their consequent philanthropic endeavors.

Opening reception: Thursday, November 8, 5:00 – 7:00 PM
