Women in Harmony Presents: “All the Wild Wonders”

Women in Harmony Performs Winter Concert

Women in Harmony, Portland’s 60-voice women’s chorus, presents its winter concert on January 20 and 21, 2018 at The Maine Girls’ Academy, 631 Stevens Avenue in Portland. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this season, Women in Harmony will perform a program of songs about nature and the environment called “All the Wild Wonders.”

In a community joint-venture, Women in Harmony will partner with the Natural Resources Council of Maine for this event, which calls musical attention to the need for sensitive stewardship of the earth’s natural resources.

“All the Wild Wonders” is the concert’s title song. Written by Sue Johnson, co-founder of the Australian ensemble Coco’s Lunch, the piece is a husky lullaby that invokes the beautiful creatures of the earth, sea, and sky. The program also features a setting of Wendell Berry’s poem The Peace of Wild Things by Joan Szymko, a much-honored composer for women’s voices.

Performances will take place on Saturday, January 20 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, January 21 at 3 pm. Tickets are available at Longfellow Books and Starbird Music in Portland, and Nonesuch Books in South Portland, as well as online Advance tickets are $12 (senior/student $10) or $15 at the door. Children under 12 attend free.

Under the direction of Catherine Beller-McKenna for 18 years, Women in Harmony sings out for all forms of social justice. The 25th anniversary celebration continues this spring with performances on May 20 and 21.
