LEARN THE FEATURES OF YOUR SMARTPHONE AT FREE DEVICE WORKSHOP IN WESTBROOK @ U.S. Cellular

Did you know that 76 percent of people would rather live without chocolate than their smartphone? Another 62 percent would rather live without TV?. Smartphones have become a "must-have" device for many people, but not everyone is aware of everything they are capable of doing. Devices such as the 4G LTE iPhone 5s and iPad Air can help simplify and enhance our lives, and U.S. Cellular wants to show Westbrook residents the tips and tricks of using these devices to the fullest. On Friday, April 18 at 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at 11 Main Street in Westbrook, U.S. Cellular is offering a free Device Workshop where current or potential smartphone users can ask questions and learn about any device they are interested in. The workshop is open to everyone, and you don't have to be a U.S. Cellular customer to attend. "We want to ensure that every customer knows how to get the most out of their device and has a great wireless experience," said Matt Kasper, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in New England. "At U.S. Cellular, we also understand the importance of having a reliable 4G LTE network so our customers can use their devices where they live, work and play." The iOS, Android(TM), Windows(TM) Phone and BlackBerry(R) options offered by U.S. Cellular enable customers to transform a smartphone to a device that meets their exact needs. Please call 207-854-3144 to RSVP to this Device Workshop. view event

  • "Mansion as Muse:" Contemporary Art at Victoria Mansion @ Victoria Mansion

Mansion as Muse: Contemporary Art at Victoria Mansion will open April 3, 2014, at Victoria Mansion, a historic house museum and National Historic Landmark built 1858-1860 and located in Portland, Maine. The exhibition will remain on view through May 21. The Mansion's Art Advisory Committee, composed of distinguished artists and museum professionals, invited three artists and one collaborative team to create works of art inspired by Victoria Mansion's incomparable interiors that are renowned for their original wall and ceiling paintings and furnishings from 1860. The participating artists are Mark Dion and Dana Sherwood, Andrew Mowbray, Justin Richel, and Amy Yoes. As explained by Committee member Denise Markonish, curator of MASSMoCA, "Victoria Mansion is a historical gem, which is why giving contemporary artists the opportunity to respond to its riches is a wholly unique opportunity. Given that the artists chosen all have deep connections to history and the decorative arts, it will be fascinating to see how they will intervene and reinterpret the objects and stories found within the Mansion. I have no doubt this exhibition will not only give visitors to Victoria Mansion the opportunity to see the space anew but will also provide these artists with much material for future works and ideas." The site-specific art works will be displayed throughout the Mansion rooms. A catalogue of the exhibition will be available for purchase. During the month of April Victoria Mansion will be open Thursday through Sunday only, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. From May 1 to May 21 Mansion will be open daily for its regular season of guided tours: Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-3:45 p.m.; Sundays 1-4:45 p.m. Admission is for adults, .50 for seniors and AAA members, .00 for children 6-17, and free for children under 6. Admission is always free for Victoria Mansion members. For more information visit the museum's website, www.victoriamansion.org. Victoria Mansion is arguably the finest surviving house of the pre-Civil War period anywhere in the country. It is internationally recognized for its original interiors by noted cabinetmaker and designer Gustave Herter, which are more than ninety percent intact. An irreplaceable document in the history of American design and domestic technology, the Mansion has operated as a museum since 1941 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.

Maine College of Art's First Annual Music Festival @ Maine College of Art, Institute of Contemporary Art

Over the years, the Maine College of Art (MECA) has not only produced renowned visual artists, but also many talented musicians. Current senior BFA student Savanna Pettengill, (also visual artist of the AV project Waco Sparkler) started thinking about this last fall. She had a dream: to bring as many of these musicians together as possible for a night of performances somewhere in the Porteous building, not only for her fellow students, but also for the public. She wanted to showcase the varied creativity the art college produces. In the end, 7 acts affiliated with the school were curated into one evening to put on a show in the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA). Suggested donations: .
